Rayon based carbon fiber is a very special product,

due to its precursor, a viscose technical fiber (in comparison with acrylic fiber precursor which is used for PAN-based CF)

Rayon based carbon fiber has no perfect microstructure

and there are many pores inside fiber after carbonization and graphitization

Thus, rayon carbon fiber has high thermal insulation and heat emitting parameters

Rayon based carbon fiber has 2 basic forms:

T22P

Rayon based graphite cloth, after treatment 2200C

Main properties of viscose based carbon fiber (graphitized type)

low modulus (80 GPA, similar to aluminum)
high heat insulation properties (as fiber has many pores and defects on its surface)
resistance to thermal load up to 3000 C in inert gas, vacuum, or N2
resistance to thermal load up to 450 C on air
chemical resistance level same as graphite
no melting point
rayon carbon fiber is electroconductive
carbon content is 99+%, ash content less than 1%
carbon cloth is soft, flexible, no skin irritating (reason is low modulus)
rayon carbon fiber is easy to impregnate with any resin type (epoxy, phenolic, novolac)

Rayon based carbon fiber has many special applications.

It is used for making of:

carbon-phenolic composites for solid fuel engines application (heat insulation ablative materials)
carbon-carbon composites (both ways via phenolic resin carbonization and via chemical vapour deposition process)
heat insulation for high temperature vacuum furnaces (3000 C)
electrical heating devices incl. wearable clothes
gas and liquid sorption filter (activated carbon fiber)
medical wound dressing textile blankets
medical oral enterosorbents
microbial fuel cells
supecapacitors
